CT Legislative Action

Support SB 386: Ranked Choice Voting!

We urgently need your help to pass SB 386, An Act Concerning the Use of Ranked Choice Voting in Party Caucuses, Conventions, and Primaries, including Presidential Preference Primaries, and in Certain Municipal Elections! Right now SB 386 has passed out of committee, but its next hurdle is to be called for a vote and pass in the State Senate. You can help by directly contacting your CT State Representatives and State Senators who are involved with this process and, most importantly, who represent you personally.

Step 1: Identify Who to Contact/Visit

Specifically, you should contact/visit:
  • YOUR State Senator! (Not sure who? Click here!)
  • State Senator Mae Flexer (D), GAE Co-Chair, [email protected], 860-240-8634
  • State Rep. Matt Blumenthal (D), GAE Co-Chair, [email protected], 860-240-8585
  • State Senator Rob Sampson (R), GAE Ranking Member, [email protected], 860-240-8800

Step 2: Craft Your Email (or Letter)

Click here to see sample email templates you can use.  We find it most effective to make these outreaches separate, personalized emails. Don't hesitate to copy from us, but also please take an extra minute to personalize your emails! We do recommend sending each email separately and tailoring it to the individual you are contacting.

Step 3: Attach Our Fact Sheet & Send

We've developed a fact sheet about SB 386 (click here to see it) - please attach it to any email or letter that you may send or hand to the legislator! Once it's attached, be sure to send your email or letter. The sooner, the better!

Step 2: Consider a Script

If you're making calls, click here for a sample script you can use. You can reference our Fact Sheet for talking points, too!

Step 3: Make the Calls

Don't be nervous, they get calls like this all the time! Be sure to be succinct, to the point, and focused on Ranked Choice Voting. You will likely talk to a staffer in the office, not the state rep or senator themselves, but be sure to ask "can I count on [the rep/senator]'s support?"

Go In-Person

Step 2: Print Fact Sheets

State Senators and Reps are busy; they can't remember every conversation. If you go in-person, bring some Fact Sheets to leave with them.

Step 3: GO!

At this point in the legislative session, the best thing you can do is get up and go; don't worry if the legislator is going to be there or not, visit their office and find out where they are. Then, go to them! Office info can be found on the CGA website.

Step 4: Follow Up (Every Day!)

One outreach won't cut it - call their office daily, email them, and do other things to build a relationship with these legislators and their staff. We want them thinking about Ranked Choice Voting morning, noon, and night! If you send a follow-up email (or several!), click here for sample email templates and click here for the fact sheet you should attach to the emails! If you're making calls, click here for a sample script you can use.
